The Fountain's Creation (cont.)
< Back
In less than 48 hours, Kat and Bob came up with dozens of drawings of possible fountains, and had theater audiences vote on the ideas they would
most like to see realized. The winner, "Plugged Leak Fountain," featured several frustrated plumbers trying desperately to
repair a series of leaks. Eventually, leaky pipes became a tuba, and the
plumbers were replaced with a musician and his pet spotted monkey.
Together
the two perform a variety of shows, playing and dancing to the strains of
original jazz compositions by Bob Tudor, and spraying cool streams of chlorinated water on delighted visitors with every note. Due to the watery musician's resemblance to Wilber Fulker, the long-time principal of the Colorado School for the Deaf and Blind who played the tuba and happened to be Bob's uncle, the fountain was named in Uncle Wilber's honor.
Many people worked to help bring Kat and Bob Tudor's vision to life. Parts
of the Uncle Wilber Fountain were created by a St. Louis company called
Hydrodramatics, the sculpture was produced in Las Vegas, Nevada, by Scenic
Technologies, and local artist Steve Wood designed and produced the
geological mosaic at the fountain's base. Kat and Bob worked closely with everyone involved to insure that every detail was executed perfectly, and even spent many hours polishing the fountain by hand before it debuted on the southwest corner of Acacia Park in September of 2000.
